Do you have a favorite restaurant? Are you a creature of habit like myself and always order the same thing off the menu because it’s really just THAT good? I can’t say that I have a favorite restaurant, but I can tell you that if country fried steak is on the menu where I’m dining, I’m ordering it. It’s definitely one of my favorite things. I’ve had some restaurants really let me down, but it hasn’t stopped me from ordering the country fried steak again at the next restaurant. However, dining out rarely ever happens for our household, so I had to learn to satisfy my addictions in my own home kitchen.
Now, not only is this satisfying to eat, it’s also satisfying to make. I mean, having a rough day? What better way to de-stress than to beat a steak with a meat mallet?? That is the very first step in creating a delicious country fried steak. The cubed steaks need to be extra tenderized, so you will beat them out to around 1/4 inch thick, working from the center-out, with a meat mallet!
Next, beat some milk and eggs together in a large bowl. In a separate bowl or on a large plate, mix up the flour and spices.
Meanwhile, preheat your cast iron skillet over medium heat. Melt some butter in it and spread it around. I usually use 1-2 Tbsp per steak.
Once the skillet is ready, work with one steak at a time. First, dip into the milk mixture and then into the flour mixture, coating well. Then, into the frying pan with each steak!
Cook the steaks until cooked through and golden brown, about 3 minutes per side. Serve hot with your favorite gravy and enjoy! We love ours smothered in my Homemade Sausage Gravy.
