I always make my own pizza sauce for any pizza I make. It can range from savory sauce, to oil based sauce, or even ranch or bbq based. Sometimes, however, my pizza toppings require a sweeter, tomato based sauce. When I know I’m going to be making a pizza with lots of salty meats like sausage or salami (a family favorite around here), I always choose this sweeter sauce that balances out the saltiness of the meats really well.

This sauce is super duper easy! It starts with canned tomato sauce and canned tomato paste. Add in some Italian seasoning, garlic, a dash of salt, and then, most importantly, brown sugar, and done! This sauce can be simmered for a while on the stove if you want a more developed flavor, but it’s not 100% necessary if you’re in a hurry. It will get better over time as it sits though! Enjoy!

P.S. It also works well for dipping sauce or pasta sauce after it’s been in the fridge overnight. Might need to add a touch of liquid for pasta though so it’s not quite as thick. 😉
Perfect Pizza Sauce
Ingredients
- 15 oz tomato sauce
- 12 oz tomato paste
- 3 Tbsp light brown sugar
- 1 Tbsp Italian seasoning
- 1½ Tbsp minced garlic
- ½ tsp dried minced onion
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 Tbsp oil
Instructions
- Heat the oil in a skillet and add the garlic and minced onion. Saute until the garlic turns slightly golden.
- Add in the rest of the seasonings, the sugar, tomato sauce, and tomato paste. Stir well. Let simmer for a few minutes and it's ready to use!
- The longer this sauce sits, the better it tastes. I typically make this a day in advance and let it sit in the fridge until I'm ready to use it. It's still delicious right away though. 🙂
