Believe it or not, I’d never tried a fried pickle until I met my husband. How is that possible? I have no idea. I guess I was so busy ordering chips and dip that I never considered the possibility of enjoying a different appetizer. Needless to say, once I had that first bite, I wanted more! The great thing about these is they are easy to make at home anytime I want!
So how easy is it to create these moreish treats? Seriously easy. You will make a batter, dip your pickle chips into it, and then toss them in hot oil for a couple minutes per side until they are golden brown. Done.
Ok, so there are a few extra little tips that do need to be addressed than that, but they are also easy.
- Put your pickle chips out on some paper towels to dry up as much of the juice as possible so the batter sticks to them better.
- Make sure your oil is ready to fry before tossing any pickles in! I use the end of a wooden spoon to do this. If the oil gently bubbles up around the end when I press it down to the bottom of the oil, it’s ready. If it barely forms bubbles, it’s not hot enough, and if it bubbles furiously, it’s TOO HOT! TURN IT DOWN and let it cool a bit before continuing on!
- Make sure to put the pickles in one at a time to prevent one huge fried pickle monster from taking form. Also, don’t cook too many at once.
I typically make an entire jar of pickle chips into fried pickles at a time. I know I can’t consume the whole jar in one sitting (or could I??), but any leftovers I have, crisp beautifully back up when I warm them up in my trusty air fryer! I haven’t figured out how to cook these from start to finish in my air fryer yet to skip the pot of grease, but I assure you, experimentation is in process!
Fried Pickles
Ingredients
- Dill pickle chips
- oil for frying
- 1 cup milk
- 1 cup flour
- ½ tsp Italian seasoning
- 1-1½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp ground black pepper
- 1 tsp poultry seasoning
- ½ tsp garlic powder
Instructions
- Add about an inch of oil to a large pot and preheat over medium heat.
- Place as many pickle chips as you desire out flat on paper towels to dry the excess moisture from them. Pat the tops with another paper towel. The dryer they are, the better the batter will stick to them.
- In a bowl, whisk together the milk, flour, and seasonings until all lumps are gone.
- Check that the oil is ready by inserting the end of a wooden spoon into the oil. If bubbles appear and rise to the top, the oil is ready. If it boils rapidly, your oil is too hot and needs to be cooled down and checked again.
- Once the oil is ready, dip each chip into the batter and then place into the oil one at a time to prevent them sticking together.
- Fry until golden brown, 3-5 minutes, flipping halfway through to cook both sides.
- Remove from oil with a slotted spoon to a plate with paper towels to absorb excess oil.
- Serve hot and crispy! Enjoy!
